Amazing Meeting of September 30

SMRN held another revelatory and enlightening meeting on September 30 with members that included: Gareth Davies, Cigdem Borucu, Nezih Erdoğan, Jan Hendrickse, Pantea Karimi, Millie Chen, Lynn Marie Kirby, Radek Przedpelski, Kalpana Subramanian, Niusha Hatefinia, and Laura Marks.

In the first part of the meeting, Laura gave members an update on the SMRN event next summer, called "A Light Footprint in The Cosmos." This four-day symposium with exhibitions, performances, and screenings will be held in June 2022 in Vancouver.

After that, our member Kalpana Subramanian, a Ph.D. student in Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, presented part of her doctoral dissertation on the poetics of breath in experimental film. She explained the concept of the cinema of breath from the perspective of yoga philosophy and affect theory, attempting to conceptualize the body and consciousness of cinema through the idea of breath, as suggested in Indian philosophy. Kalpana then briefly examined the work of filmmakers whose work can be seen as a sort of fusion of the human body and the cinematic body like Carolee Schneemann's works. Kalpana maintained that the notion of breathing cinema is a reaction to the question of how one may regard film to be truly alive and embodied and to define this relationship, she articulated the concept of yogic cosmology of the body.
