Breathing Cinema: SMRN Meeting of October 2019
SMRN had another thrilling meeting on October 30 with members joining including Nina Czegledy, Siying Duan, Azadeh Emadi, Nezih Erdoğan, Somayeh Khakshoor, Laura Marks, and Kalpana Subramanian.
Our member Kalpana Subramanian presented her research on the poetics of breath in cinema. In her project, she employs a transcultural and interdisciplinary framework to re-imagine the genealogy of embodiment in experimental film. By bringing non-Western perspectives on embodiment (yoga philosophy and Buddhist meditation practices) into dialogue with Western perspectives on embodiment stemming from feminist theory, phenomenology and Deleuzian philosophy, she builds cross-cultural connections
to facilitate her inquiry into breath poetics in cinema. She argues that breath is essential to the conceptualisation of embodiment and points to how it could be used to explore notions of being and becoming in cinema.
The second part of this meeting was a second free brainstorm about SMRN’s 2021 exhibition and symposium. Following on the thread of thinking from the last meeting, we discussed how to exhibit our members’ work in progress. Siying and Azadeh suggested that we start from a mind map and draw connections among members’ keywords. We agreed that this would be our next collaborative project.
