We are pleased to invite you to another SMRN public lecture with Dr. Radek Przedpełski. In this talk, Dr. Przedpełski will present a decolonial media archaeology of Gilles Deleuze’s crystal image from Cinema 2: The Time Image. Revisiting Deleuze’s reference to Krzysztof Zanussi’s film Structure of Crystal (1969), the talk explores how Eastern European and African cinematic and artistic traditions, particularly Polish cine crystallisations and Sudanese Crystalist conceptualism, construct an alternative genealogy of sustainable media rooted in socialist contexts. This decolonial perspective reframes the crystal image and forges new connections between Eastern European and African artistic practices.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation with Dr. Laura U. Marks and a Q&A session.
