We are pleased to invite you to another SMRN public lecture with Dr. J.R. Osborn. In this talk, Dr. Osborn will present Jacques Derrida’s grammatology, which proposes a radical rethinking of written and graphic communication—a vision in which spacing, graphicality, multidirectionality, and différance disrupt the linear structure of alphabetic text.

But are Derrida’s concepts useful for the study of diagrammatics? This paper explores that question by (1) examining what Derrida does—and does not—say about diagrams, and (2) analyzing the few instances in which he employed diagrams to elucidate written arguments. Although Derrida does not directly theorize the “diagram” as either a specific written form or a cognitive model, his work offers a valuable set of concepts for examining and developing diagrammatic practice.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation with Dr. Farshid Kazemi and a Q&A session.

We look forward to your participation.
