Jacob Pascoe
Jacob Pascoe holds a BFA in Film Production and a Minor in English Literature (2018), as well as an MA in Cinema Studies (2026), from the University of British Columbia. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. A filmmaker, writer, and scholar, his work explores the intersections of mysticism and cinema, with particular attention to how film may formally register encounters with the beyond. Drawing primarily on Jewish mystical traditions, his research examines spiritual and mystical styles, asking how moments of metaphysical excess, rupture, and the ecstatic might be simulated through cinema.
Pascoe has participated in the Telluride Film Festival Symposium and VIFF’s Catalyst Program. In 2023, he was awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant to develop a feature film. His directorial work spans narrative and experimental short films and music videos and has screened at festivals including the Whistler Film Festival and on platforms like Film Shortage. His writing includes fiction, criticism, and film theory, and has been published by Border Crossings, SAD Magazine, and The Collidescope. Across both his creative and scholarly practice, he is interested in art as a site where the occulted might become sensory and visible.
