Steven Baris was born in Aberdeen Washington. He grew up on various American Indian reservations in Northern California, Montana, and Washington State, where his father worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. During his twenties he worked for the US Forest Service, fighting forest fires which supported his frequent and often extended travels to locations in North and Central America, Europe, and North Africa. He received a BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and a MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He lives and teaches art in the Philadelphia area. He has exhibited widely throughout North America and Europe; his work is represented in New York by the Odetta Gallery, in Philadelphia by the Pentimenti Gallery, and in Denver by Space Gallery. Along with other grants and prizes, he is a grant recipient from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His artwork is included in numerous corporate and private collections in North America, Europe and Australia.
